Workshop Berlin: Programme

04 June 2008 Lectures
Room 314/315 - Sound Studies
14:00 – 14:30 Introduction - Peter Veenstra
14:30 – 15:45 Architecture and sound in historical perspective - John Heymans
On Sound and Space, on the history of architectural acoustics and beyond.
16:00 – 17:15 The anthropocentric misconception - Achim Wollscheid
Explanation of his latest works: interactive sound-work, mostly in public space. To do sound-work in public space means to accept and include the environment, and its sound factors. If people are invited to interact, sociological and psychological considerations come into play: who interacts, within which framework or setting, with what expectations, limitations, etc.
17:30 – 18:45 Resonant vessels, receptive bodies - Mark Bain
Sound and Architecture and the affect to occupants who inhabit them. A brief overview of some of the work of Mark Bain as it relates to the sonic activation of architecture and public space with the connection to the audience as an enhanced listening experience.
19:00 – 20:15 Landscape architecture in the light of sound - Per Hedfors
His research raised the orchestration of the soundscape as a new area of concern in the field of landscape architecture. Professionals can learn to recognise the auditory phenomena which are characteristic of a certain type of land use. Acoustic sources are obvious planning elements which can be used as a starting point in the development process.
20:15 – 20:45 Conclusions - Geert-Jan Hobijn
